National Cancer CNS Day

Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance is highlighting the amazingly dedicated work of Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Today (March 14th) is National Cancer CNS Day when their care for and support of cancer patients is recognised applauded.

Years of evaluating the role has firmly established the CNS as an essential member of the multidisciplinary team in enhancing cancer care. CNSs use their expertise to assess, diagnose and treat people living with cancer and their role extends to other areas such as education and research.

Responsibilities includes holistic support, specialist advice, symptom control and signposting to other services. CNS support can ensure people have continuity of care during their cancer journey as CNSs are usually the first point of contact when a patient requires any support and they continue to be involved in their care for many years.

Hospital trusts across the country who have Cancer CNSs are will be hosting thank you activities today, the fourth national event of its kind.

Jon Hayes, Managing Director of Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance, said: “The brilliant work of our cancer clinical nurse specialists is rightly being put under the spotlight today. National Cancer CNS Day gives us all a chance to show our appreciation of those in this role who support our cancer care teams right across Merseyside and Cheshire.

“With the demand for cancer services increasing, we need CNSs more than ever before, and National Cancer CNS Day gives us a chance to highlight the incredible work they do and promote their importance in the process of personalised treatment and care of our cancer patients.

“Thank-you for your expertise, dedication, and psychological support you give.”
