A mobile service delivering cervical cancer screening across Cheshire and Merseyside has reached a major milestone, with more than 2,000 tests conducted since launching last year.
The Living Well Service, provided by Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, began offering cervical screening in July 2024. Initially piloted in Sefton, the service was expanded across Cheshire and Merseyside following its success.
Cervical screening is just one of several health services delivered from the specially designed mobile units, which travel across the North West offering vaccinations, health checks and wider wellbeing support.
The screening programme is available to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 and plays a vital role in preventing cervical cancer through early detection.
Geraldine Marsh, Operations Manager at Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Reaching 2,000 screenings is a huge testament to the dedication of the team and the number of people who have come forward to be checked. We put a great deal of effort into making sure our service is welcoming, compassionate and, above all, safe.”
The NHS has set an ambition to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040 through initiatives that include increased screening. The mobile clinics are designed to make screening more accessible by offering walkâin appointments and bringing services directly into communities, helping to reach people who may otherwise delay or avoid screening.
Dr Sinead Clarke, Associate Medical Director for Quality and System Improvement at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside ICB, said: “Reaching 2,000 cervical screenings through the Living Well Service is a major milestone and clear evidence that bringing healthcare directly into our communities works. By making screening available in places where people live or work, we’re reaching individuals who might otherwise miss this vital test.”
