A Merseyside nurse has been given a national award for her work in cancer treatment and care.
Sophie Needham, who works at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, has been named as Oncology Nurse of the Year in the British Journal Nursing Awards.
Sophie, who is 36 and lives in Burscough, has worked at Southport Hospital for two-and-half-years and has been a nurse for 14 years.
She said: “It was such an honour just to be recognised. There were three other candidates and one with over 37 years in cancer nursing!
“It was an honour to represent a district general hospital such as Southport and highlight the fantastic work of the acute oncology team.
“To win such a prestigious award so early on in my oncology nursing career is such a huge compliment and inspires me to continue working hard to help those living with cancer and beyond.”
Sophie was nominated as she and her team created a mnemonic tool using the word ‘SPINE’ to prompt practitioners in the management of patients diagnosed with metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC).
