The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has announced a multi-million-pound transformation of two of its satellite units, improving facilities for patients in Wirral and Halton.
Patients receiving treatment at Delamere in Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral and at the CANTreat unit in Halton are set to benefit from a major £8.8 million investment to refurbish and upgrade facilities there.
The exciting plans will be jointly funded by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Clatterbridge Cancer Charity through a dedicated fundraising appeal. The investment includes the creation of a brand‑new Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy (SACT) treatment unit at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral, replacing the existing Delamere Unit.
The new unit will be located on the ground floor of the Wirral site, with views onto surrounding woodland to create a calm and peaceful environment. Designed to be bright, modern and more spacious, it will better reflect the growing number of patients treated at the centre and bring the unit closer to Radiotherapy and Outpatients services.
Patients treated at Halton will also benefit from a complete modernisation and redesign of the CANTreat SACT unit. During the refurbishment, the service will temporarily relocate to Ward B3 on the Halton site, which is close to the current unit.
Across both sites, patients will enjoy new, comfortable treatment chairs and flexible treatment bays, offering the choice of social interaction or increased privacy. The improvements will ensure patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other cancer treatments in Halton and Wirral benefit from welcoming, modern facilities like those available at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool.
The investment has been approved in principle by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Trust Board and Clatterbridge Cancer Charity’s independent Board of Trustees. Detailed design work will now begin, with patients and staff actively involved to help shape the final proposals. Contractors will be invited to bid for the work, with final business cases approved before construction starts.
Work on the Halton SACT unit could begin in August 2026 and is expected to take around three months. Design work for the new Wirral SACT unit will take place during 2026, with construction likely to start in 2027 and take up to a year due to the complexity of the project.
