A purpose-built centre giving free cancer support and information is now open in Wirral.

The new Maggie’s building at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral is now supporting people with cancer, their family and friends. It has been funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation and replaces the charity’s interim centre, Maggie’s Merseyside.

The centre will be called Maggie’s Wirral and is still within the grounds of the cancer hospital and just a short walk from the existing interim centre, which will be replaced with a garden for visitors and workers.

In 2014, Maggie’s opened its interim centre in the hope that the charity would support 3,000 visits a year. In 2019, the centre supported more than 17,000 visits, and, despite the pandemic, the centre supported people 12,000 times in 2020.

The charity says the new centre will provide more space, allowing its professional team to deliver more of Maggie’s core programme, courses and support groups.

The library and private rooms will offer individual, one-to-one and family support space away from the openness of the centre, allowing the Maggie’s team to open its doors to more people who are not ready for group support.

Centre Head Kathy Wright said: “Our new centre will give us more space which means when possible our professional staff will be able to deliver more of our core programme, courses and support groups.

“It’s wonderful to have a permanent centre here on the Wirral and we’re excited to be able to start supporting more people with cancer in the surroundings of a truly uplifting and inspirational building.”
