A Merseyside hospital trust has won a top national award for its cancer services.

St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trusts has been given an Excellence in Healthcare Award at the NHS Parliamentary Awards.

The award was given for the trust’s work to provide safe and timely care for cancer patients during the pandemic.

The trust created a Surgical Cancer Hub to co-ordinate referrals for cancer treatment and prevent lengthy delays for patients.

The Hub was later transformed into the first reporting Community Diagnostic Centres – which Cancer Alliance has helped to establish across Cheshire and Merseyside – which are now reducing the backlog in diagnosing patients generally.

Divisional Medical Director, John McCabe, was among the representatives accepting the award on behalf of the team and the trust, and said: “To receive the national award is quite simply amazing.”
