A Wirral community interest company is giving people in Cheshire East who are due to have cancer surgery the chance to become fitter ahead of their operation.

One Wirral CIC, working with charity Everybody Health and Leisure, will run the service in four leisure facilities in East Cheshire after being commissioned by the Cancer Alliance.

Cancer patients referred from Macclesfield and Leighton Hospital who are about to have surgery will be assessed before being given a bespoke exercise plan by a trainer experienced in the needs of cancer patients.

The Cancer Prehabilitation Service can improve treatment outcomes, reduce the likelihood of post-surgery complications and cut the length of time patients spend in hospital.

One Wirral CIC has been running a similar project in Wirral and reports outcomes there for patients who have used prehabilitation, including:

  • 98% reported increased or maintained physical activity
  • 93% reported reduced or maintained levels of fatigue
  • 99% reported improved or maintained mental wellbeing
  • 5% reduction in length of hospital stay in colorectal and urological cancer patients.

Lucy Holmes, Wellbeing Lead at One Wirral CIC, who is managing the Cancer Prehabilitation Service, said: “We are really excited to be working in partnership with Everybody Health and Leisure. This collaboration will enhance the offer to cancer patients awaiting surgery allowing them to improve their health."
