Patients in Cheshire and Merseyside have become the first in Europe to be offered pioneering robotic-assisted surgery for head and neck cancers.
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) is the first NHS trust in the UK to receive Intuitive’s da Vinci Single Port (SP) surgical system.
The £2m robotic arm allows surgeons to operate in the smallest of spaces, reducing the need for major invasive operations and could help speed up recovery for cancer patients the Fazakerley hospital.
It was paid for in large part to a donation by the Marina Dalglish Appeal, set up in 2005 to support other cancer patients after Marina was successfully treated for breast cancer at Aintree in 2003.
